ジョン・レジェンド（41）が、ビルボード・ミュージック・アワードのパフォーマンスに込めた、妻への思いとは？

2020年10月14日（現地時間）に開催された「ビルボード・ミュージック・アワード」のステージに、ジョン・レジェンド（41）が登場。先月末に死産を経験した妻、クリッシー・テイゲン（34）に捧げたパフォーマンスが、多くの人の涙を誘った。

ジョンが披露した曲は、今年６月19日（現地時間）にリリースされた新アルバム『ビガー・ラヴ』の収録曲である『ネヴァー・ブレイク』。

『ビガー・ラヴ』は、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大により世界中が苦境に陥っているなか、人々に「少しでも元気を出してほしい」という思いで制作されたアルバム。『ネヴァー・ブレイク』については「これを書いたのは2019年だが、今、より深い意味を持つ曲となった。どんな困難にも屈せず、希望を持ち続けてほしい」というメッセージを込めたと説明している。

しかし、この日のステージでジョンが『ネヴァー・ブレイク』を捧げた相手は世界でなく、妻のクリッシー。

９月末に、第３子を死産したことをインスタグラムで報告したクリッシー。病室で泣き崩れる姿や、ジョンと手を繋いで寄り添う写真とともに、「助けてあげられなくて、ごめんなさい」とメッセージを綴った。

それから約２週間後に迎えた、本ステージ。ジョンは「この曲をクリッシーに捧げます」と囁き、自らのピアノ演奏で曲を披露をした。

We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough. . .
